Introduction to Karmapa’s Practice Manual

The Third Karmapa, Person:Karmapa, 3rd (1284-1339), had a special connection with the Severance teachings and was instrumental in codifying and bringing them into the Karma Kagyu lineage. He received the complete teaching cycles of Dampa Sangye at the age of eighteen (Red Annals) and Person:Ma gcig lab sgron’s Severance teachings from Lama Kunga Döndrup (Kun dga’ don grub). At the end of this text the lineage of transmission indicates that he received teachings from Lama Namtshowa (gNam mtsho ba or gNam mtsho do pa), one of his teachers at Tshurpu monastery (Thinley 1980) and only the third in the lineage since Machik herself. Most of Rangjung Dorje’s works on Severance are found in volume eleven of his collected works, with only two included here in the Treasury of Precious Instructions.
