Introduction

In the following two texts, Jamgön Kongtrul provides liturgies for the ritual implementation of the Five Golden Dharmas. The first, Radiant Blessings of the Vajra Lines, presents the preliminary and concluding liturgies, which would be selectively added to the practices found in the text that follows. It begins with traditional general preliminaries, common preliminaries, and the uncommon preliminaries that are unique to the Five Golden Dharmas. The liturgies for the Six Dharmas are mostly presented in full, but for the remaining Golden Dharmas only the slight variations are reported (except for the Khecarī practices, to which one is referred elsewhere), so that one is expected to apply the same to each.

The Sealed-Knot Vajra adds to the previous liturgies, together providing everything for the Five Golden Dharmas that one would need to implement the practice. Kongtrul mentions right at the beginning that such liturgy did not exist previously for Niguma’s practices, unlike for those of Nāropa, and so he has composed them. Reading the descriptions of the meditations as one practices them is considered an essential support for mindfulness of visualization. The ritualized recitation is the practice of sādhana, the particular form of meditation in the Secret Mantra tradition, or Vajrayāna.
