1960 - Installed at Rum-btegs.
One of the main heart disciples of the 16th Karmapa.
He fled to India in 1959 in the aftermath of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, and grew up at Rumtek Monastery under the care of the 16th Karmapa.
The 3rd 'jam mgon kong sprul was very gifted and a great diplomat.
Following the Karmapa's death, the third Jamgon Kongtrul was actively involved in the search for his successor. However, he died in a car accident on April 26, 1992, before the search could be completed.
His passing was a major loss for the karma kaM tshang tradition.
